Streetlights

The City of Welland is responsible for administering and maintaining all streetlights, including lights located on Regional roadways.

Maintaining approximately 6,500 streetlights, the City keeps you illuminated as you travel the roadways and sidewalks to and from your favourite locations. In 2013, Welland completed Phase 1 of the LED streetlight conversion, replacing 4,300 high-pressure sodium (HPS) cobra head-style streetlights with light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures. In Phase 2, the City replaced approximately 2,000 post-top fixtures with LED fixtures, primarily in residential neighbourhoods.

Maintenance requirements

The City follows the Ontario minimum maintenance standards for repairing streetlights. Streetlights are deemed operational or requiring repair as follows:

  • The number of non-functioning consecutive luminaires does not exceed two.
  • More than 70 per cent of the luminaires on any kilometre of highway are functioning.

Streetlight repairs that meet the minimum maintenance standards are repaired as time, funding, and resources permit.

If any of these requirements are not met, the City will arrange for repair.
