Burials

Burial permit

Typically, funeral directors assist with obtaining a burial permit.

A burial permit is required before carrying out the burial/funeral arrangements or cremation.

You can acquire a burial permit from the jurisdiction where the death occurred. For situations not involving the assistance of a funeral home/director, please contact 905-735-1700 x2154.

Death registration

A funeral director usually oversees the process of registering a death.

A completed statement of death and a medical certificate or coroner’s warrant are submitted to the City Clerks office by the funeral director to register an Ontario death. The City Clerks office forwards the documents to the provincial Office of the Registrar General for completion. The Registrar General’s office has recorded deaths in Ontario for the past 70 years. The Archives of Ontario keeps older records. The City of Welland does not hold death records.

Death certificate

The funeral director will issue copies of proof of death that you can use in certain situations.

There are some organizations; however, that may require an official death certificate (legal record of death) from the Office of the Registrar General. Official death certificates are issued once a death is registered.
