Catharine Street
Catharine Street is Welland’s last remaining visible brick road. In April 1912, Welland began a program to pave its main streets with brick.
In 1913, brick paving was extended along Catharine Street as part of the town’s plan to establish an integrated transportation system linking the three railway depots.
The street is constructed of medium red metropolitan paving brick laid in a stretcher bond pattern over a six-inch concrete base. Construction was completed by December 31, 1913, for $2,613.36. Although subsequently covered with asphalt, wear and tear have exposed most of the brick, which retains its original design.
