City of Welland honours Francophone heritage on Franco-Ontarian Day

The City of Welland will recognize Franco-Ontarian Day with a flag-raising ceremony at Welland Civic Square on Friday, September 25, at 11:30 a.m.

Welland is one of Ontario’s designated Francophone communities, and the City continues to celebrate the community’s rich Francophone heritage.

“Franco-Ontarian Day is a chance to honour the contributions of French-speaking residents, which have shaped the culture and history of Welland,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “It is an honour to celebrate this special day by raising the flag as a symbol of shared tradition, pride, and inclusivity.”

The Franco-Ontarian flag was first raised in Sudbury in 1975 and became the official emblem of Franco-Ontarians in 2001. Welland is proud to continue raising the green and white flag in recognition of the community’s Francophone heritage.

In recognition of the City’s efforts in support of its Francophone community, the Honourable Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Minister of Francophone Affairs, has written a letter extending her congratulations to Welland for continuing to honour this province-wide celebration.
