171 new native trees grow Welland’s urban canopy

Welland’s urban forest has received a boost with the planting of 171 large native trees along the corridor between Lincoln Street and Division Street, supported by a combined $80,000 investment from the City and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

The City secured a $40,000 grant through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Growing Canada’s Community Canopies program and contributed an additional $40,000 to the project.

The new trees expand canopy coverage in the area, providing more shade, improving air quality, supporting biodiversity, and helping the community adapt to the impacts of climate change. A diverse selection of native species was planted to support the long-term health of the urban forest while creating habitat for local wildlife and pollinators.

“Growing Welland’s tree canopy is an investment in the community we want to build for the future,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “These trees will contribute to healthier neighbourhoods and a more resilient city while creating benefits residents can experience for generations. This project reflects Council’s commitment to responsible environmental stewardship and making Welland an even better place to call home.”

The planting supports the City’s Environmental Stewardship priority in Welland’s Strategic Plan, which includes expanding the tree canopy and improving the quality of land, water, and air.

“Planting a diverse mix of native species helps us build an urban forest that is better equipped to thrive over the long term,” said Jennifer McPetrie, director of community services. “These 171 new trees strengthen the existing canopy while providing important environmental benefits, from shade and cleaner air to additional habitat for wildlife and pollinators.”

Funding for the project was provided by the Government of Canada’s 2 Billion Trees program. The initiative supports Canadian municipalities in expanding and strengthening local tree canopies to help create greener, healthier, and more resilient communities.
