Welland moves together for the 2026 ParticipACTION Community Challenge

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | May 26, 2026

The City of Welland is inviting residents, businesses, schools, and organizations to get moving this June as the community gears up for the 2026 ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

Running from June 1 to 30, the national initiative encourages communities across Canada to track physical activity and compete for the title of Canada’s Most Active Community and a $100,000 grand prize to support local sport and recreation initiatives.

After an impressive first year in the challenge, Welland is ready to build on its momentum. In 2025, the city ranked 49th in Canada and 10th in Ontario, a strong showing that reflected Welland’s commitment to active living.

This year’s local theme, Welland Moves Together, invites people of all ages and abilities to get involved in ways that are simple, accessible, and fun. Whether it’s walking, rolling, stretching, dancing, cycling, joining recreation programs, or moving more at work or school, every movement counts toward Welland’s total.

“The ParticipACTION Community Challenge is an opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate active living, and showcase the incredible energy and spirit that exists throughout Welland,” said Amanda Degazio, manager of business and community services. “Last year, residents, organizations, schools, and businesses helped Welland achieve an outstanding result in our first year participating. We are excited to build on that success and inspire even more people to get involved this June.”

The ParticipACTION Community Challenge directly supports the City’s strategic priorities of Health and Well-being and Livability by promoting active lifestyles, strengthening community connections, and enhancing recreation opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities.

Residents are encouraged to take part by committing to stay active throughout June, whether through daily walks, fitness classes, recreation programs, or activities with family and friends. Every effort contributes to Welland’s overall standing and helps the community climb the national rankings.

Organizations, schools, businesses, clubs, and community groups are also encouraged to register programs and activities through the ParticipACTION website and track involvement throughout the month. Participating groups can support employee, student, and community well-being while creating opportunities for people to get active together.
