ParticipACTION Community Challenge

Let’s make room to move, Welland.

This June, the City of Welland is lacing up for the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge—a coast-to-coast celebration of movement, connection, and community spirit. From June 1 to 30, every minute of activity you track brings us one step closer to being named Canada’s Most Active Community—and yes, there’s a $100,000 prize on the line to support local recreation.

Whether you’re walking the dog, biking the canal trail, dancing in your kitchen, or stretching between meetings—it all counts.

So rally the family, grab your friends, and let’s put Welland on the map.

Ready to join the movement?

Tracking your activity helps you stay accountable and more likely to achieve your goals. Download the free Optimity app, ParticipACTION's digital app partner, to get a personalized step goal, participate in regular activity challenges and earn rewards for healthy actions!

What is the Community Better Challenge?

Each June, communities across the country compete to track the most physical activity through the Optimity app. The most active community will win $100,000 to support local recreation and wellness initiatives.

Whether you're biking along the canal, dancing in your living room, walking to school, or playing a game of tag—every move matters.

It’s easy to get involved—and every person makes a difference:

  • Download the Optimity app and commit to being active this June.
    • Move your own way—gardening, stretching, swimming, and household chores all count.
  • Join activities and events organized by the City.
  • Start a workplace or club challenge to boost motivation and register your event
    • It’s easy to register your events, initiatives and programs and track participation on the web portal. A step-by-step video on how to do so will be available on the Community Challenge webpage

Getting active isn’t just good for your body—it’s good for our whole community.

When we move more, we feel better. Physical activity helps boost your mood, sharpen your focus, and give you more energy to take on the day. It’s also a powerful way to reduce stress, sleep better at night, and simply feel more like yourself.

But it doesn’t stop there. Getting active connects us—to our families, our friends, our neighbours, and our community. Whether it’s a weekend walk, a game in the park, or joining a community fitness event, movement brings people together. And that’s what the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge is all about.

When we participate as a city, we’re doing more than just logging minutes—we’re:

  • Creating stronger social connections
  • Supporting mental and physical well-being
  • Encouraging a sense of pride and belonging
  • Building a more vibrant, healthy, and inclusive Welland

Welland is stronger when we move together. Check out our ParticipACTION toolkit for posters, suggested social media posts, and promotional graphics to get your group started.

  • Businesses to support employee wellness through activity breaks, group events, and tracking minutes.
  • Schools to encourage classroom movement, playground games, and after-school challenges.
  • Clubs and community organizations to host events and friendly competitions to add to Welland’s total.
