Canalside Players bring Norm Foster’s Halfway There to Welland stage

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | April 10, 2026

The City of Welland invites everyone to experience an evening of local theatre with the Canalside Players’ production of Halfway There, a heartfelt and humorous play by renowned Canadian playwright Norm Foster. This charming comedy highlights the power of friendship and community through Foster’s signature wit and warmth.

Presented by Welland’s volunteer theatre group, the production brings audiences to the small town of Stewiacke—famously halfway between the North Pole and the equator—where a tight-knit group of women gathers daily at a local diner. When a charming, heartbroken doctor arrives in town, friendships are tested, secrets surface, and perspectives on love and life begin to shift.

Filled with humour and relatable moments, Halfway There offers a warm and engaging story that celebrates connection, community, and the power of friendship.

“Community theatre plays an important role in bringing people together and creating shared experiences,” said Tori Royer, recreation coordinator for the City of Welland. “Productions like Halfway There support our livability goals by offering accessible, local arts and culture opportunities that enrich quality of life for residents.”

Directed by Jessica Sweeny, the production highlights the talent and dedication of local performers and volunteers.

“Norm Foster’s writing captures humour and heart in a way that audiences immediately connect with,” said Sweeny. “This show is about friendship, change, and finding joy in unexpected places, and we’re excited to bring that story to the stage in Welland.”
