Logan Avenue site will grow as Welland’s first mini forest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | September 19, 2025

The City of Welland is creating its first mini forest, a new green space that will bring 1,700 native trees and shrubs to the Logan Avenue area.

The project is made possible through a $10,000 grant from Green Communities Canada. The Green Advisory Committee endorsed the plan as part of its work to support urban greening and environmental sustainability.

Mini forests, also known as micro or tiny forests, are planted using the Miyawaki method. This technique places native trees and shrubs close together to grow faster and taller, creating a dense, healthy ecosystem in just a few years. These forests clean the air and improve local biodiversity, reduce stormwater runoff while helping to cool neighbourhoods, and provide natural spaces that support community well-being.

“This project highlights the many ways urban forests benefit our community,” said Grant Munday, director of planning and development services. “Cleaner air, cooler neighbourhoods, and better stormwater management are just some of the impacts we’ll see from planting 1,700 trees and shrubs. The Logan Avenue site will also be a place where people can connect with nature right in their neighbourhood.”

Beyond the environmental benefits, the Logan Avenue mini forest represents a long-term investment in Welland’s quality of life. It will transform unused land into a community asset where families, schools, and neighbourhood groups can connect with nature, learn about the value of trees, and take pride in contributing to a healthier city.

Residents, schools, and local groups are invited to take part in planting this new green space on Saturday, September 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at 94 Glenwood Pkwy in Welland. All materials and instructions will be provided, and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.
