City of Welland receives $1.67M for exceeding housing targets

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | June 18, 2026

For the third consecutive year, the City of Welland has surpassed its provincial housing target and secured funding through Ontario’s Building Faster Fund. Based on its 2025 performance, the City has received $1,669,317 to support infrastructure that enables new residential development and accommodates future growth.

With this latest allocation, Welland has received nearly $4.9 million through the Building Faster Fund over the past three years. Funding has been directed toward major infrastructure projects that support growth, including $3.2 million for the First Street infrastructure renewal project and $1.7 million for Ontario Road Phase 2.

In 2025, construction began on 528 new homes in Welland, exceeding the City’s annual target of 430 homes by nearly 123 per cent. This achievement reflects Welland’s continued commitment to increasing housing supply while supporting Ontario’s broader objective of building more homes across the province.

“The Building Faster Fund investment from the province supports our commitment to managing growth responsibly and ensuring that growth pays for growth in Welland,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “This much needed funding helps build the roads, water infrastructure, and other services needed to support new development. We appreciate the province’s continued recognition of municipalities that are delivering results.”

The Building Faster Fund is a three-year, $1.2-billion provincial program that rewards municipalities that achieve at least 80 per cent of their annual housing targets.

Funding received through the program must be used for housing-enabling and community infrastructure projects, including roads, water and wastewater systems, and other essential services needed to support population growth and new housing development.
