Francophonie Day highlights Welland’s proud Francophone heritage

The City of Welland invites residents to celebrate Francophonie Day and recognize the vibrant French-speaking community that contributes to the city’s cultural identity.

On Friday, March 20, at 11 a.m., the City will raise the Franco-Ontarian flag at Civic Square to mark the occasion. Residents are encouraged to attend the ceremony and join in celebrating the history, culture, and contributions of Francophone communities across Ontario.

Francophonie Day, celebrated annually on March 20, recognizes the French language and the global Francophone community, while highlighting the important role Francophones play in shaping communities across the province and beyond.

Welland is one of Ontario’s designated Francophone communities and has long been home to a strong and proud Francophone population. The City continues to celebrate this heritage and the many contributions Francophone residents make to local culture, business, education, and community life.

“Francophonie Day is an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and lasting contributions of our Francophone community,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “Welland has a proud Francophone history, and raising the Franco-Ontarian flag is a meaningful way to recognize the language, traditions, and vibrant spirit that continue to shape our city.”

In recognition of Francophonie Day, the City has also received a letter from the Honourable Caroline Mulroney, Ontario’s Minister of Francophone Affairs, acknowledging the importance of celebrating Francophone culture and communities across the province.

The Franco-Ontarian flag, first raised in 1975, represents the unity and pride of Ontario’s Francophone community. Featuring a green and white design, the flag includes a white fleur-de-lis symbolizing the French language and a green trillium representing Ontario.
