Government of Canada’s contribution recognized in construction of two Welland trail projects
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | December 17, 2025
The City of Welland and representatives from the federal government gathered on December 17 to recognize the Government of Canada’s contribution toward the construction of two new multi-use trail links in Welland. Chris Bittle, Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, joined Mayor Frank Campion to acknowledge this investment in strengthening the city’s active transportation network.
The Government of Canada provided more than $1 million toward the projects through the Active Transportation Fund. The City funded the remaining balance through its previously approved capital program and parkland reserves, investing approximately $1.3 million to advance trail construction.
“This funding strengthens Welland’s trail system in ways that directly support how people want to move around our city,” said Mayor Campion. “By creating safe, connected, and accessible routes, we make active transportation a natural part of daily life and support the health and well-being of our residents, and we’re grateful for the Government of Canada’s partnership in building a more connected and livable community.”
The projects include trail construction and comfort amenities such as new benches, accessibility features, and the planting of trees and shrubs, and were designed to meet modern standards while respecting surrounding natural areas. All trail construction occurred on public lands, and the City will maintain the new routes as part of its broader trail network.
Once complete, the trail links will add approximately 4.5 kilometres of fully accessible pathways, connecting Hilda Street to the Welland Canal Parkway Trail and linking North Welland to Niagara College. These connections will improve how residents move through the city today, and support a more connected, active, and sustainable Welland in the future.
These trail links advance priorities outlined in the City’s Community Trails Strategy and contribute to ongoing efforts to enhance livability by improving mobility, recreation opportunities, and connectivity.
