Kingsway tree replanting continues with grant from Niagara Community Foundation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | December 15, 2025

The City of Welland has received $14,300 in grant funding from the Niagara Community Foundation to support the next phase of tree planting along the Kingsway in Dain City. The funding advances the City’s work to restore and enhance the local tree canopy following widespread loss caused by the Emerald Ash Borer infestation.

This grant represents the second consecutive year of support from the Niagara Community Foundation for this initiative. Last year’s contribution enabled the planting of 70 large-caliper native trees in City-owned greenspace along the Kingsway. With the additional 70 trees planted by City staff in November, the project has now added 140 new native trees to the area in recent years.

“The Niagara Community Foundation has once again demonstrated its commitment to strengthening local greenspaces, and we’re grateful for their continued support,” said Dave Steven, manager of parks, forestry and cemeteries. “These new plantings enhance the ecological health and beauty of the Kingsway corridor, help rebuild our urban forest, and contribute to a more sustainable environment for residents today and for generations to come.”

The replanting effort aligns with the City’s Strategic Plan priority of Environmental Stewardship, which emphasizes protecting ecosystems, improving air and water quality, and expanding the urban tree canopy through responsible decision-making and operational practices.

The newly planted trees will provide shade, improve air quality, and strengthen the long-term health and resilience of the neighbourhood’s greenspace.
