City completes purchase of employment lands to support job creation

The City of Welland has completed the purchase of two parcels of land that will become part of its growing network of employment lands, areas designated to attract investment, support business development, and create local jobs.

Located at 432 and 476 Ridge Road, the combined 58-acre site includes approximately 47.6 acres of developable land. Once developed, it will form Welland’s seventh business park, supporting an estimated 18 lots and creating the potential for 200 to 800 jobs.

“Employment lands are vital to Welland’s economic future,” said Lina DeChellis, director of economic development and strategic initiatives. “Preparing these lands for future development ensures Welland remains ready to welcome new industries and attract long-term investment. By planning ahead, we’re positioning the city as a leading destination for growth, innovation, and job creation.”

The City has adopted the term employment lands to reflect a broader economic vision. While traditionally known as industrial lands, employment lands encompass a range of sectors from advanced manufacturing and logistics to technology and green innovation. The term positions Welland to attract a wider variety of future-ready employers and aligns with provincial planning trends.

Strategically located near Highway 140, Highway 406, Highway 58A, and existing employment lands, the Ridge Road properties are well suited for future employment uses. The acquisition supports the City’s efforts to expand its limited inventory of serviced, shovel-ready parcels and meets strong market demand for 2-to-3-acre sites.

This initiative directly supports the City’s Strategic Plan priority of Economic Growth, which focuses on creating a diverse and resilient local economy through infrastructure investment, innovation, and sustainable development.
