Flag raisings and community celebrations mark milestone anniversary of Franco-Ontarian Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | September 22, 2025

The City of Welland will proudly recognize Franco-Ontarian Day with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall on Thursday, September 25, at 9 a.m.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag, a historic milestone proudly celebrated across the province, including in Welland, where the festivities reflect a deep commitment to the Francophone community. The Franco-Ontarian flag was first raised in Sudbury in 1975 and became the official emblem of Franco-Ontarians in 2001. Its green and white colours, representing summer and winter, are deeply tied to the community’s heritage.

“As one of Ontario’s designated Francophone communities, Welland is proud to celebrate the contributions of our French-speaking residents,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “Franco-Ontarian Day is an opportunity to recognize the cultural and historical impact of our Francophone community, and we are honoured to raise the flag as a symbol of our shared pride and inclusivity.”

Following the City Hall ceremony, Francophone organizations in Welland will host a community flag raising at Club Richelieu at 10 a.m., followed by a full day of celebrations. Activities include a free community barbecue, as well as afternoon and evening performances at Paroisse Sacré-Coeur.

In recognition of the City’s ongoing support of its Francophone community, the Honourable Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Francophone Affairs, has once again written a letter extending her congratulations to Welland for joining in this province-wide celebration.
