City of Welland receives $1.46 million for again surpassing provincial housing targets
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | June 19, 2025
For the second year in a row, the City of Welland has exceeded its provincial housing target and earned funding through Ontario’s Building Faster Fund. Based on its 2024 performance, the City will receive $1,467,045 to support infrastructure that enables residential development.
In 2024, Welland broke ground on 408 new homes—114 per cent of its target of 358. This strong performance helps address local housing needs and contributes to the province’s wider goal of building more homes across Ontario.
“This investment from the province supports our approach to ensuring that the costs of growth are not carried by our local ratepayers,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “By consistently meeting and exceeding our housing targets, we’re helping to address the housing crisis while securing the funding necessary to enhance infrastructure and community services. We appreciate the province’s continued support through this performance-based program.”
The Building Faster Fund is a $1.2 billion, three-year program that rewards municipalities that meet at least 80 per cent of their annual housing targets. This round of funding includes more than $6.7 million for Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, and Welland, which collectively broke ground on 1,964 new homes in 2024.
Funds received through the Building Faster Fund must support housing-enabling and community infrastructure, including roads, water and wastewater systems, and other essential services that accommodate population growth.
