Empowering through sport at Welland’s fourth annual Girls Sports Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | June 5, 2025

Welland Girls Sports Day returns for its fourth year as a spirited celebration of sport, confidence, and community connection for girls ages six to 12. Hosted in partnership with Niagara College, this one-day event has become a highlight on the city’s annual calendar—designed to empower girls through inclusive, welcoming, and engaging sport experiences.

Taking place on Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Empire Sportsplex, the event will feature a range of sport and activity stations led by community volunteers and collegiate athletes. A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, June 8, 2025. This year, more than 200 girls have registered to take part in what has become a signature event for youth engagement in Welland.

From its inception, the initiative has been about more than just play—it’s about changing the game. Girls who attend Welland Girls Sports Day are introduced to a range of activities that promote skill-building, teamwork, and most importantly, a sense of belonging. The event offers a supportive environment where girls are encouraged to try new things, discover their strengths, and feel seen and celebrated.

“Creating opportunities for girls to engage in sport isn't just about physical activity—it’s about building self-esteem, leadership skills, and a sense of community,” said Jessica Ruddell, director of community services for the City of Welland. “This event is a catalyst for lasting impact in the lives of participants.”

Girls Sports Day is dedicated to empowering girls as active participants in sport by addressing the persistent gender gap in physical activity and engagement. Research shows that adolescent girls are more than three times more likely than boys to drop out of sport, with only one in ten boys leaving during this critical stage. Welland Girls Sports Day aims to reverse this trend by fostering supportive, inclusive environments that encourage girls to stay active, build confidence, and remain engaged in sport throughout their lives.

“Our collaboration with the City of Welland for Girls Sports Day is one of the most meaningful ways we connect with our community,” said Michele O’Keefe, senior director of athletics and student engagement at Niagara College. “When we create spaces where girls feel supported and inspired, we’re not just growing athletes—we’re growing leaders.”

Welland Girls Sports Day supports the City’s strategic priorities by championing health and well-being, encouraging youth engagement, and enhancing livability across the city. The event plays a meaningful role in promoting inclusion and expanding recreational opportunities for girls.
