City of Welland honours veterans with new crosswalk installations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | June 4, 2025

Two new Veterans’ Crosswalks will soon stand as prominent tributes to those who have served—and continue to serve—in the Canadian Armed Forces. These symbolic installations in Welland will be located near the Royal Canadian Legion Welland Branch 4 on Morningstar Avenue and by the cenotaph at Chippawa Park on Fitch Street.

Painting of the crosswalks is scheduled to take place on June 4 and 5, weather permitting. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Friday, June 6 at 10 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 4, located at 383 Morningstar Ave., Welland.

“This project reflects our community’s deep respect for veterans and our commitment to honouring their service,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “The crosswalks serve as visible reminders of sacrifice and courage, integrated into the very fabric of our city.”

The initiative originated from a Notice of Motion brought forward by Councillor Claudette Richard and supported by Council in December 2024. It was initially proposed as a cost-sharing arrangement with the Legion for one crosswalk. However, in a unanimous show of support, Council amended the motion to fully fund both crosswalks using the City’s operating surplus reserve.

The design approved by the Royal Canadian Legion’s Dominion Executive Council ensures respectful and consistent representation across communities. The City has worked closely with Legion representatives to finalize the locations and design features.

These crosswalks are more than commemorative markers—they are part of a broader effort to create a city that reflects shared values and community pride. By honouring veterans in locations of significance, the project also supports Welland’s ongoing goals of enhancing public spaces and making the city more accessible and connected, as outlined in the City’s strategic priorities.
