City of Welland’s Wonders of Welland wins national recognition for best publication

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | June 3, 2025

The City of Welland is proud to announce that its original illustrated children’s book, Wonders of Welland, has received a prestigious Award of Excellence from the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) in the Best Publication category. The book earned the silver award, placing second nationally among public relations and communications professionals across Canada. This national recognition celebrates outstanding achievement in clear, creative, and inclusive storytelling.

The 36-page-book—available in both English and French—follows Jackson and his dog Chipper as they explore the city’s landmarks, events, and treasured gems over the course of a year. Designed to ease the anxieties of relocation and foster a sense of belonging, Wonders of Welland serves as a heartfelt welcome to new residents and a celebration of community pride for long-time locals.

“We knew we had something special with this book when the idea first landed, and to be recognized by CPRS is humbling,” said Marc MacDonald, chief communications & engagement officer. “The feedback we’ve gotten has been incredible. People keep telling us how much it’s helped them settle in and feel at home. We’re so proud of how it’s connecting with families and making a real difference in our community.”

Inclusivity is at the heart of the project. The book features a diverse family representing the LGBTQ2+ community, artwork by local Indigenous artist Stephanie Fiddler-Stanwyck, and depictions of characters with disabilities and diverse backgrounds. These elements reflect Welland’s commitment to representation and community engagement.

Remarkably, Wonders of Welland was produced at no cost to taxpayers. Financial support was generously provided by local developers—Empire Communities, LIV Communities, Mountainview Building Group, Primont Homes, and Silvestri Investments—while in-kind contributions came from CERF Niagara, Pride Niagara, the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre, Niagara College, and the Welland Jackfish Baseball Club.

The creative team behind the book includes author Marc MacDonald, illustrator Javier Carranza, a Niagara College alumnus and former City co-op student; editor Paul Orlando; and designer Jane Walker-Scott. Their collaborative effort has resulted in a publication that bridges generational gaps, promotes literacy, and nurtures civic pride.

This recognition places Welland among Canada’s leading communications teams, highlighting the City’s innovative and inclusive approach to community storytelling.

Residents can access free copies of the book at City Hall, the Welland Community Centre, and all Welland Public Library branches. Digital versions are also available for download at www.welland.ca/WoW.
