Second annual Welland Girls Sports Day coming to the Empire Sportsplex June 3

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | May 30, 2023

The City of Welland, in partnership with Niagara College and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, is hosting the second annual Welland Girls Sports Day on Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Empire Sportsplex.

Coming off a successful inaugural event last fall, partners from across the city are hosting the free event, which drew more than 170 participants last year.

“We know the importance of sport and activity in young people’s lives, especially for girls,” said Rob Axiak, director of community services. “Partnering with Niagara College’s athletic department to increase awareness and opportunity of the sports world to girls is impactful in many areas, including a sense of place, confidence, and teamwork.”

Open to girls from 6 to 12 years old, the event introduces a variety of sports from accomplished local female athletes and coaches. There are six different sports stations for participants to try out after an initial warm-up and stretch: softball, basketball, beach volleyball, tennis, golf, and soccer.

“Getting young girls involved with sport in a safe and healthy way provides them with more opportunities for growth, improves their confidence and promotes the importance of an active lifestyle,” said Michele O’Keefe, Niagara College Director, Athletics and Student Engagement. “By connecting participants and their families to their local community sports facilities, we hope to see more young girls engaged and passionate about sport.”

The facility and all programs are accessible to everyone, and no experience is required. In addition, participants will receive free swag and sports equipment to take home and a free lunch.

Registration is open until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30. A rain date for the event is Sunday, June 4.
