City of Welland the new home for Linamar’s new, industry-leading giga casting factory

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | May 11, 2023

The City of Welland is now home to Linamar’s new, state-of-the-art giga casting factory, producing significant structural components of electric vehicles.

The facility will be located at 59 Canal Bank Street, a redevelopment of an industrial site comprised of a portion of the former Union Carbide lands and Page Hersey/Energex lands, creating approximately 200 new jobs.

An advanced manufacturing company, Linamar offers leading-edge technology and deep manufacturing expertise in creating solutions that power vehicles, motion, work, and lives for the future.

“We are thrilled to have attracted this significant new investment to Welland. Linamar’s presence in our community signals the next wave of investment in our local economy and is a testament to the progressive steps Welland is taking,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “As a globally-recognized automotive supplier and proud Canadian employer, Linamar’s Welland-based employees will supply advanced components for the zero-emissions vehicles of the future from this new state-of-the-art facility. We are excited to welcome Linamar to Welland.”

The Linamar investment will be for a state-of-the-art 300,000-square-foot facility housing critical equipment for efficiently lightweighting and simplifying complex assemblies for electrified vehicles. The facility is a highly-integrated casting, machining, and coating operation with the first-of-its-kind giga tonnage high-pressure-die-casting capabilities by an auto supplier in North America or Europe.

“We are excited about the investment in Welland for this state-of-the-art facility critical to the future of electrified vehicles,” said Linamar CEO Linda Hasenfratz. “As the first supplier to invest in this equipment in North America, Linamar will naturally take a market leadership position in this technology.”

The start of operation is expected to commence in February 2025.
