Emergency Preparedness Week reminds everyone to be prepared for an emergency situation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | May 8, 2023

The City of Welland, along with all Niagara municipalities, encourages its residents to take heed of the Emergency Preparedness Week's theme and 'Be Prepared'.

During Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week (May 7-13, 2023) this year, the Niagara Region is releasing a Get Prepared Niagara video highlighting three types of hazards Niagara residents could face and the importance of an emergency safety plan.

"Residents may not know the importance of preparation when it comes to managing an emergency," said Fire Chief Adam Eckhart. "Each member of the community has a role to play in assisting our friends, family, and vulnerable community members alike. Being prepared is crucial to surviving an emergency."

Emergency preparedness increases knowledge and reduces risks in an unforeseen event; emergency preparedness is everyone's responsibility. Residents can prepare themselves by:

  1. Making a plan: Include actions that will help yourself and your family stay safe before, during and after an emergency event.
  2. Building a kit: Gather supplies that will prepare you and your family to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in the event of an emergency.
  3. Staying informed: Follow local authorities for up-to-date information and instructions. Be sure to include a portable, battery-operated radio in your emergency kit.

"We are very excited to partner with our sponsors to develop and share this emergency preparedness educational film for the residents of Niagara," said Cathy McGrath, Emergency Management Coordinator, Niagara West Emergency Management. "When we are prepared as individuals, it helps make our community safer and more resilient."

This designated week is a national effort led by Public Safety Canada, provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
