Fireworks safety reminder

Posted | May 16, 2025

As Victoria Day approaches, the City of Welland and Welland Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) are reminding residents to celebrate safely and responsibly. Fireworks are only permitted on Victoria Day, Canada Day, and the three days preceding each holiday.

Discharging fireworks outside of these days—or on public property such as parks, open fields, or roadways—is strictly prohibited under the City’s Fireworks By-law 2003-127. Those found in violation of the by-law may face fines of up to $5,000 under the Provincial Offences Act.

WFES strongly discourages family or neighbourhood fireworks displays. Instead, residents are encouraged to attend public fireworks shows organized by the municipality or other recognized organizations.

If you do choose to use consumer fireworks on permitted days, please follow these safety tips:

  • Buy fireworks from reputable retailers—never use illegal or homemade fireworks.
  • Always read and follow label directions carefully.
  • Use fireworks outdoors in a clear, open space—never indoors or near flammable materials.
  • Have a water source nearby, such as a garden hose or bucket.
  • Never light fireworks during strong winds or near dry vegetation.
  • Only light one firework at a time, and never attempt to relight a dud.
  • Keep fireworks away from children, and ensure adults are there to handle and supervise at all times.
  • Wear eye protection when lighting fireworks, and never position your body over a firework.
  • Be respectful of neighbours and pets—fireworks may cause distress or anxiety.
  • Use fireworks only between dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m.) and 11:00 p.m.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleanup and disposal.
