Ward Boundary Changes – Effective for the 2026 Municipal Election
On August 12, 2025, Welland City Council approved updated ward boundaries that will take effect for the 2026 municipal election. As a result of these changes, some residents may be required to vote in a different ward than in previous elections. Voters are encouraged to review the updated ward map to confirm their ward prior to voting in 2026.
Why Were the Ward Boundaries Updated?
The review examined population changes across the city, particularly growth in north Welland, and confirmed that the previous ward structure no longer reflected current population distribution. Without changes, some residents would have experienced reduced representation at the Council table.
“This review was about making sure every resident of Welland has fair and equal representation,” said Tara Stephens, Director of Legislative Services and City Clerk. “Council and the community both had input into this process, and the option we’re moving forward with reflects how our city is growing while keeping neighbourhoods and communities together.”
Following months of analysis and public engagement, four ward boundary options were presented to Council. Option B was selected as the preferred option because it:
- Balances population across all wards
- Respects established neighbourhoods and natural boundaries
- Creates ward boundaries that are clear, compact, and easy to understand
Other options would have divided more communities, created irregular ward shapes, or were less likely to remain effective as the city continues to grow.
What Happens Next?
- The new ward boundaries will be used for the 2026 and 2030 municipal elections
- A further ward boundary review is planned prior to the 2034 election
- There are no additional costs to the City associated with implementing the new boundaries
As the 2026 election approaches, the City of Welland will share additional information through print and digital channels to help residents understand how the changes may affect their ward and voting location.
