LOOKING BACK ON 2019
Welcome to 2020 and best wishes from the City of Welland.
2019 was a great year for our city - we are growing and thriving. Council can point to a number of major achievements this past year.
City of Welland staff and Council have collaborated on a sound financial plan for 2020 that will result in improvements to all classes of infrastructure. With investments in new Fire Stations, a new Transit Facility, waterfront redevelopment, and in the hard infrastructure we depend on now and into the future which will enhance the quality of life in our municipality.
In December we announced that Welland City Council passed the 2020 budget with a 0.65 per cent decrease along with a record $62 million in capital spending for 2020. Welland City Council also approved the Water/Wastewater operating and Capital Budgets for 2020.
We are predicting a successful year. Building permits issued in 2019 totaled 790 which amounts to construction value of $130,340,523.85. We are on track to meet and exceed the 2019 new housing unit projections. This growth pattern supports the estimated increase in Welland’s population of 18, 641 by 2041.
Empire Communities, one of Canada’s largest housing development companies, have purchased land in Welland and were attracted to the City because of its Brownfield CIPs that will help the company remediate and redevelop former industrial lands into residential subdivisions. Empire is proposing to build up to 4,300 new homes along with commercial development, parks, pedestrian trails and waterfront paths and connections to the downtown core.
A new lumber truss manufacturing company – Alpha Properties Inc. will bring between 51 and 74 fulltime jobs to our city. Alpha Properties’ investment of approximately $18.5 million is proposing the 8,875.30 square metre development to be built at 7 Woodlawn Road in the Niagara Gateway Economic Zone and Centre.
It’s been a great year and I look forward to seeing continued successes as a community in 2020.
