Mayor’s Report

October 2018

Welland Council and I appreciate city staff’s commitment to transparency and accountability through an open government strategy and for distinguishing Welland as one of the leading Canadian and international cities for open data initiatives. I am pleased to welcome the World Council on City Data (WCCD) on November 13, and look forward to accepting the ISO 37120 platinum status on behalf of Welland.

Data is a valuable resource, not just for Council decision-making, but also for providing insight into socioeconomic issues. Having this valuable information, and data at our fingertips, allows us to re-examine city programs, services, and assets.

Welland now joins ten other Canadian cities in compliance with the ISO 37120 Sustainable Development of Communities: Indicators for City Services and Quality of Life. This certification connects us with an international network of cities from all four corners of the globe and has earned us platinum status because we reported 95 out of the 100 indicators. These indicators range anywhere from Finance and Urban Planning to Transportation and Recreation.

Joining an international network of open-data cities not only opens up the opportunity for information exchange, but it also moves Welland forward with its smart cities initiatives. This allows city staff to find resourceful solutions to challenging problems, and create strategies for delivering more efficient public services to residents and business owners. As a smart city, the city strives to create cost-effective services through The Internet of Things (IoT) by sharing and recording information. From documenting cracks in city sidewalks to categorising the city’s tree umbrella, we now have the open data resources to build a smarter future for Welland.
