Warning signs are intended to provide advance notice to road users about unexpected and potentially dangerous conditions on or near the road. The conditions to which warning signs apply typically require that the road user exercise caution and may require that drivers slow down in order to travel safely in the presence of a hazard.
Warning signage designs and installation locations must follow the guidelines of the Highway Traffic Act and/or the Ontario Traffic Manual.
School Area signs are used where children from a school adjacent to a roadway, walk along or cross the roadway. Road users are provided advance warning of this situation so that they are prepared to exercise caution in proceeding through the area. This sign provides advance warning of this nature, by informing motorists of the approaching school area.
The pentagon shape of the School Area warning sign is intended to distinguish it from other pedestrian warning signage and to attract the motorists attention to potentially increased hazards or dangers as a result of school children near traffic.
It is illegal to drive a vehicle in excess of 40 km/h within an area designated as a school area by the erection of regulatory signage.
The purpose of the Playground Ahead or often referred to as "Children Playing" sign is to provide advance warning of a designated playground or park that is located adjacent to a downstream section of roadway. The presence of children on or near the roadway may cause an unexpected hazard to motorists.
Signs are only installed in advance of the playground or park that directly fronts a roadway. These signs are not intended to be used in residential areas simply because children may play on or near a street even though there isn’t a designated playground area. This is a common experience on residential roadway and one that doesn’t require advisory signage.
