Radar Message Display Board

Picture of Speed Radar Board

The Radar Message Display Board consists of a portable message board and radar speed gun which is temporarily installed on the side of a roadway. The board electronically displays the speed of approaching vehicles, compared to the posted speed limit.

This program involves the residents of Welland, the Regional Municipality of Niagara and the City of Welland Traffic and parking Operations Division. The aim of the program is to make both motorists and pedestrians aware of vehicle operating speeds on local roadways. It is hoped that raising awareness will reduce travel speeds within neighbourhoods.

There is a need to balance enforcement activities with an educational component. This program provides a shared responsibility between the community and the City of Welland and is often effective in dealing with speeding concerns.

This program is geared to providing individual feedback to motorists on their driving behaviour. As an educational tool, the radar/speed signs allow motorists the opportunity to take corrective action. The community is not only involved in problem identification but also plays a key role in resolving the concerns. This is not an enforcement program nor is it a speed deterrent. However, it is one tool that can be used to address aggressive driving on roadways.
