About the Project
Nearly four years ago Welland officials began planning for a 100 percent conversion to this energy-saving street lighting technology. As the first ALLED® SL4 street light was hoisted onto its pole at the corner of Frazer Street and Hooker Street on April 3, city officials applauded the start of an amazing conversion that is expected to provide energy savings of 75 percent for the next 15 to 20 years. Better yet, Welland expects to realize total savings for energy and maintenance avoidance of approximately CAD$2.4 million over the next 15 years with this new LED street lighting.
Welland chose the ALLED® SL4 fixture from Appalachian Lighting Systems, based in Ellwood City, PA, not only because it is far more efficient than other solid-state fixtures but because city officials were also able to make full conversion of all 6,700 fixtures with no upfront capital outlay through an SSL Energy Solutions shared-savings contract. Using the City’s existing operating budget, the Energy Solutions contract covers the purchase, installation, maintenance and warranty on the ALLED® lights for the 15-year term of the Welland contract.
ALSI makes the industry’s most reliable LED fixtures and the company’s ALLED SL4 fixtures feature an embedded control and monitoring system that sends the city transportation office a text or email if a problem arises with a streetlight, which significantly reduces maintenance costs. In addition, the transportation office plans to utilize scheduling capabilities of the system to dim lights during low-traffic hours to further reduce energy usage.
When will I see lights up in my area?
The installation of the SL4 Fixtures will begin on April 11, 2012 and continue until August of 2012. The Project Team at SSL Energy Solutions is proud to have partnered with Ontario based electrical contractors, Trans Test Ltd.
