General Information

• School Crossing guards have one of the most responsible and important positions within the City of Welland, to ensure the safety of pedestrians when crossing a roadway.
• Through recently approved legislation, a school crossing guard is required to cross all pedestrians, not just children.
• A school crossing guard is a person employed by a municipality and who directs the movement of pedestrians across a highway.
• A hand held stop sign is displayed in an upright position and facing traffic approaching in each direction.
• School Crossing Guards are regulated to stop the movement of traffic under the authority of the Highway Traffic Act
• Stop your vehicle a safe distance before reaching a designated school crossing.
• Guards are on duty as follows:
  • Direct vicinity of school – ½ hour prior to admission and after dismissal
  • Locations further away – ¾ hours.

How to apply to be a Crossing Guard

To apply for a School Crossing Guard position with the City of Welland, please obtain a School Crossing Guard Application at the following location:

School Crossing Guards must be sixteen years of age or older and must provide a criminal record summary.  In addition, school crossing guards must be will to work in various types of weather conditions.
