The Welland Farmers’ Market has been a meeting place for residents and visitors since 1907. Archived newspaper articles report a flurry of patrons at the Saturday morning market, buying eggs at 15 cents per dozen. Families wandered the market at the beginning of the 20th century to purchase fresh fruit from the back of horse pulled buggies. Children begged parents to buy the strawberries, which were sold for three boxes at twenty-five cents. Mother’s carefully chose the freshest vegetables, while father’s chatted about the fine quality of the market sausage.
One-hundred years have passes since the Market first opened in 1907; however, the market remains the same vital place to shop and socialize. Families continue to gather at the market to select the best food from local farmers. The Welland Community is strong in support and tradition. Farmers have sold at the market for generations, while their customers have also patronized them generation after generation.
