Cross Street and the Civic Square are the Central Point of Downtown Welland. This area is a central hub for pedestrian activity with direct access to the Courthouse, City Hall, Public Library, Downtown Merchants and the Recreational Canal. Design Rationale: |

| Site Description: A triangular piece of land that connects Usufruct Avenue, The Boardwalk, the foot of Cross Street to the aqueduct. It currently houses a banner pole, nautical flag pole, several sculptures and a bicycle rack. The site is flat and visible from all three directions. Design Rationale: |
Gateway 1 - Cross Street North

| Site Description: Already established as a gateway to the downtown approaching from the east, this wedge-shaped piece of land contains a "Welcome to Downtown Welland" brick and wood sign, shrub plantings, and a telephone booth, electrical outlet box, bench and large steel commercial sign. | Site Description: This gateway area on Niagara Street is at the edge of Riverbank Park, along the banks of the Welland aqueduct. The area contains a large seasonal planting bed that features a different floral display each summer, as well as a trail, log park sign and a brick wall from a previous signage feature. | Site Description: This area actually incorporates the intersections of 3 streets - the major streets Prince Charles Dr. and West Main St., and the small residential Catherine St. Catherine Street has historical significance for the City as it is one of the last remnants of streets that were paved entirely in re paving bricks in the early 1900's. The median separating Catherine Street from Prince Charles Drive contains a LACAC marker denoting the significance. Design Rationale: |

| Site Description: The intersection of King and Griffith Streets marks the beginning of Merritt Park, a significant City of Welland Feature. The gateway feature is proposed for the southeast corner of the intersection, currently quite blank and barren with its asphalt kill strip and adjacent asphalt parking lot. Design Rationale: |

| Site Description: The intersection of these two Regional roads, #68 (King Street) and #29 (Lincoln Street), creates a leftover triangular piece of land which presents opportunities for establishing a gateway feature making the entrance to downtown Welland when approaching from the south. The site currently features a large spruce tree in the centre, surrounded by a series of ornamental planting beds. Design Rationale: |

| Roadway Designs (4781k~pdf) - This 13 page document shows the proposed roadway designs for the majority of roadways in the downtown core. Final engineering designs are expected to be completed by February and the implementation process will begin over a period of time. | ||
