PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE

Vent-Free Fireplace System

December 23^rd, 2009

Welland Fire and Emergency Services are advising residents that a Compact Vent-Free fireplace system, manufactured by Pro Com, currently being sold at local Liquidation World stores, is not approved for sale in Canada.  The Technical Safety Standards Association (TSSA) is issuing a provincial offence order to discontinue the sale of these appliances.   This fireplace system carries the mark of CSA Design Certified; however, use of the CSA trademark is unauthorized.  This appliance has not been approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) for sale in Canada.  The link below identifies the certification marks for Canada.

Residents are advised not to purchase this Compact Vent-Free fireplace system.  If you, or anyone you know, have purchased this system, you are advised to contact the Fire Prevention Office of Welland Fire Services.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Welland Fire & Emergency Services are advising homeowners that homes with heat recovery ventilation (HRV) systems manufactured by Venmar Ventilation Inc. may be at risk of fire. The thermal protector in the motors of these systems can fail and pose a potential fire hazard.
